Shantiniketan is a small town near Bolpur in the Birbhum district of West Bengal. Shantiniketan meaning 'the abode of peace' is one of the outstanding creations of Rabindranath Tagore, the great author, artist, songwriter, educationalist and the central figure of the Bengali Renaissance.The town is home to Visva Bharati founded by Rabindranath Tagore in 1921. It was declared a central university in 1951. It has produced great artists and musicians.
Get In & Out
Bolpur is the nearest railway station. It is a two to three hour journey by train from Kolkata. Shantiniketan is well connected by buses from all around. Santiniketan is connected with Kolkata by an excellent road via Durgapur Expressway. So travelling by car is a good option. Good drivers can cover the distance in about 3 hours.

Cycle-rickshaws are the most convenient means of transportation.
Climate & Season
Shantiniketan has a tropical climate. It is moderately warm, with summer temperatures at around 35-45 ? and winter at 6-15 ?. July and August see heavy rainfall.

In 1901, Rabindranath started a school at Shatiniketan named Brahmachary Ashram that was modeled on the lines of the ancient gurukul system. After he received the Nobel Prize that enhanced not only the Pride of India but also the prestige of Shantiniketan, the school was expanded into a university. It was renamed Bishwa-Bharati, which Tagore defined as where the world makes a home in a nest.
At Sonajhuri you can enjoy the lost charm of Shantiniketan with the winding village roads, untouched forests, Adivasi Villages, the Kopai River and the Khoai region.
